Below is a list of attractions and activities in the area. This isn’t an exhaustive list, so it’s worth checking out the local tourism websites and Facebook for up-to-date information. Go North Wales is the official tourism website that covers the local area.
Activities
- Criccieth Multi Golf – pitch and putt, frisbee golf, water sports including kayaking and paddleboarding.
- Surfing – there are surfing schools in Abersoch including Offaxis and West Coast Surf. Porth Neigwl or Hell’s Mouth and Porth Oer / Whistling Sands are both famous for their surfing and can be found on the Lleyn Peninsula.
- Trains – there are plenty of trains from the mainline to the small narrow gauge trains. The most famous is the Ffestiniog Railway and the station is in Porthmadog, where you can catch the train to Caernarfon or Blaenau Ffestiniog: Ffestiniog Railway.
- Yr Wyddfa – the highest mountain in Wales and probably the busiest! There are 6 routes to choose from and further information can be found on the National Park website. There is also the Snowdon Railway which runs from Llanberis and tickets can be purchased here. It is advisable to plan your trip before you head off; the weather is changeable and can be very cold even in the height of summer. Walking boots, plenty of layers, food, and water are a must.
- Zip World - from zip lines to underground golf. There are plenty of activities to choose from at four different locations within a 50 minute drive of Criccieth: Bethesda, Blaenau Ffestinog, Betws-y-Coed and Dolgarrog.
- Castles – steeped in centuries of history we have quite a few castles in the area for you to choose from! Criccieth, Caernarfon and Harlech are the most well-known in the area. More information can be found on the Cadw website.
- Historic places – the National Trust has several places in the area that are worth visiting including Penrhyn Castle in Bangor, Plas Newydd just over the bridge on Anglesey and Plas yn Rhiw on the Lleyn Peninsula.
- Portmeirion – famous Italianate style village in Minffordd where the 1960’s series The Prisoner was set and also famous for its architecture. Has two hotels, places to eat and shops with fantastic views across the estuary.
- Beaches - there are plenty of beaches in the area and along the Lleyn Peninsula. Criccieth beach is quite pebbly with some sandy areas. Black Rock Sands in Morfa Bychan is a sandy beach and the most famous - and popular - in the area. Other beaches on the Lleyn include: Llanbedrog, Porth Neigwl, Porth Oer (Whistling Sands), Porth Towyn and Porth Dinllaen which is home to the famous Tŷ Coch Inn.
Places to Eat
From fish and chips to fine dining, there is plenty of choice in Criccieth. It is worth booking in advance, particularly during July and August:
- Dylan’s Criccieth – eat in or takeaway.
- Cadwaladers – famous for its ice cream. Eat in or takeaway.
- Poachers Restaurant – popular restaurant in Criccieth.
- The Crab and Lemon – seafood and Mediterranean restaurant.
- Spice Bank – Indian restaurant.
- Castle Fish and Chip shop – very busy during the summer but well worth the wait.
- Bwyty 51 – tapas restaurant.
- Tir a Môr - café and restaurant.
- Tonnau – located at the Caerwylan Hotel on the seafront.
